Rockabilly clothing, retro clothing, zombie pinups…

With so much information and so many stores claiming to be rockabilly, what is a girl to do? What exactly IS Rockabilly?

The term “Rockabilly” is synonymous with the rock ‘n roll style music of the 1950’s. Think  Rock-meets-Country music. Elvis is a great example of Rockabilly style music. Rockabilly is just another term for a sub-culture such as “punk” or “scene” where people enjoy a certain genres of music, style of clothing and hair, and events.

Now that we have the history lesson our of the way, lets move on to What Is Rockabilly Clothing

Rockabilly is a term used to refer to anything retro. Rockabilly clothing usually refers to items such as; Cute polka dot retro dresses, dresses with dainty cherry prints, full circle skirts, vintage items from the 1950’s, and anything else that has that 1950’s appeal. “Rockabilly” does not only refer to clothing, but more of a “lifestyle.”

Modern day male rockabillies often wear slim jeans, have a bandana somewhere (ie. back pocket, or worn as a wrist cuff), and often wear a retro or vintage shirt, while female rockabillies love any sort of retro dresses, skirts, and tops, and wear dolled up hair. One of the more popular rockabilly hair styles among the ladies is the “Bettie Hair.” This refers to hairstyles similar to that of Bettie Page. Rockabillies  today may adorn themselves in vibrant tattoos, and piercings, but don’t you dare confuse them with “Psychobillies.” :D

“Psychobilly” is very similar to “Rockabilly” but usually has darker undertones in both music and dress. Some great physchobilly bands are Tiger Army, The Creepshow, and The Horrorpops. The clothing may consist of retro inspired clothing, but with darker or morbid prints, such as zombies, skulls, etc…instead of polka dots and cherries.

The Scene Queen Tiered Bow DressPump Up The Volume Dress

Left: The Scene Queen Dress – Eclectica – $49.90  Right: Pump Up The Volume Dress – Mod Cloth – $74.99

This dress is superb with it’s super voluminous layers, giant bow hung from the front, a sash tie in back, and adjustable straps. The cotton/poly material has natural crinkling, that can be accentuated, as in the picture on the right, or ironed on low low heat, for a slightly more polished look. Try this dress strapless with some neon platform heels, and some mod black eyeliner, and you’re good to go!

This dress already sold out once, so get it before it gets swept away again!

If you watched The Secret Life Of The American Teenager – The Rhythm Of Life, you probably couldn’t help but notice a pretty fabulous dress with an 80’s feel. It’s our Scene Aesthetic Mod Dress! In the show, the character Ms. Binks was wearing the dress.

Scene Aesthetic Mod Dresssecret-life-american-teenager-binks-dress

Rock your special event in style! This dress features light boning in the bodice to give you that super sleek look, along with pouffy layers of tulle and polka dots. A fuscia bow gives a pop of color and an updated 80’s feel, and at under $90 you’ll be sure to be the center of attention at your special event.

A few tips to play the uniqueness of this dress up:

Retro Shoes - Polka Dot Heels1. For an alternative 80’s style, or mod retro style, grab a pair of chunky fuscia pumps with an inner platform, or some black polka dot wedges such as our Retro Polka Dot Wedges. These wedges are perfect with this dress because the contrasting polka dots plays off the pattern on the dress, and once again we have a pop of color with the fuscia bow.

2. Add chunky jewelry like a DIY splatter paint cassette tape necklace with big chunky beads, or a couple colorful chunky bracelets and you’ve got an outfit that will grab everyone’s attention.

3. To really play up the alternative style, add a pair of fisnet tights. We love the footless kind, or even the stirrup variety of tights.

Feel free to stop on by and get a good look at Eclectica’s Scene Aesthetic Mod Dress and tell us what you would add to this dress to make it yours.

Bright skinny jeans in hot colors are still remaining one of the top trends this season. New neon colors are coming, and we have them all. From size 0 to size 15, there is sure to be a size to fit everyone perfectly. And, at only $39 a pair, you can’t go wrong.

About Eclectica

The story of Eclectica started from one girl’s frustration with the lack of good fashion in corporate chains and the lack of good prices in area boutiques. She knew that it was possible to find unique clothing from local and indie designers that were at prices people loved and her motto has always been ‘Just because you pay more, doesn’t mean get more.’ The thought you put into how you dress says much more than how much you paid for a brand name.

EclecticaClothing.com  takes pride in hand selecting each and every item they carry; buying what they love and what they’d love to wear. Bringing something special to their customers is what they look forward to each and every day, and they promise they will continue to bring in the best indie clothing, shoes, and accessories at prices that won’t make your pockets bleed.

The story of Eclectica started from my frustration with the lack of good fashion in corporate chains and the lack of good prices in area boutiques. I knew that it was possible to find unique clothing from local and indie designers that were at prices people loved. My motto has always been ‘Just because you pay more, doesn’t mean get more.’ I believe that the thought you put into how you dress says much more than how much you paid for a brand name.

One day in late October 2005, I was browsing Craigslist out of boredom when I came upon a listing for a store front in one of Portland’s most loved shopping districts; The Hawthorne District. Figuring nothing would come of it, I immediately went to the location just to check it out. However, the moment I saw the space, I knew it was mine.

I didn’t have a business degree, or knowledge of the fashion industry, but I learned quickly. My first stops for alternative indie clothing were at fashion districts; miles of nothing but clothing, shoes, purses, accessories, and jewellery. It was a shopping love affair; every girl’s dream. My next adventure to find indie clothing led me to tradeshows. What an overwhelming experience! I didn’t even know where to begin. I caught on extremely quick and began wheeling and dealing with some of the most amazing indie labels around.

Six months into the business, I became antsy for a website. I knew nothing about programming, but I quickly learned I had a knack for it. Exactly one year after I opened the brick and mortar, in November 2006, EclecticaClothing.com was born.

After 4 years in the Hawthorne District, I decided that my passion for programming as well as fashion would be more cohesive in the virtual world. This would also provide me the time to concentrate fully on improving the site, and hunting down new and fresh indie clothing labels.

Here at EclecticaClothing.com we take pride in hand selecting each and every item we carry. We buy what we love and what we’d love to wear. Bringing something special to our customers is what we look forward to each and every day, and we promise we will continue to bring in the best indie clothing, shoes, and accessories at prices that won’t make your pockets bleed.

We go beyond just being a punk, emo, alternative, or indie style clothing store.

We are fashion for the terminally hip.

We are Eclectica.
